Polemika: Těžší to teď bude mít víc hráčů

Comment: It will be harder for more players now

Yes, it can be agreed that Israel will have a harder time since the mishap that was the shooting down of a Russian plane in Syria. However it should not be forgotten that since the “mishap” that was the Idlib deal it may quite possibly get much more difficult in Syria also for the Russians. While the whole world is celebrating the successful prevention of World War III, Damascus is certainly not excited by the agreement between Moscow and Turkey.

After the annexation of the Alexandretta sanjak (Liwa Iskandaroun) – originally connected with Syria in the west of the Idlib province and north of the Latakia one – by Turkey at the end of the 1930s, it is the second significant modern-time chipping by Ankara of a part of a sovereign Syrian territory. Moreover, it a) comes in a situation where many patriots have still harbored hopes for the return of the originally removed area (i.e. Iskandaroun aka Alexandretta) under the administration of Damascus, and b) is symptomatically shrouded in an impassable haze of a “higher goal” deal made by external powers whose might – in an unpleasant (and almost arrogant) way – fundamentally exceeds that of Syria.

Instead of a return of the original territory, there is another “external approval” with the acquisition of a new piece of prey. This is not just an analogy – it’s a simple fact.

At the same time, the matter resonates not only with the historical reminiscence, but also with a sort of trampling down the Syrian ego. In the context of the traditional Levantine shame / pride culture, an approach like that may move things to new, irrational levels.

If I were a Syrian patriot, an army general or just anyone who had believed the Russians so far, I would see the Russian-Turkish “Idlib deal” as a treason. When a member of the local culture labels someone as a traitor (hypocrite, liar, etc.), it is in most cases a final verdict. At the same time – according to my sober estimate – we may admit that at least someone in the Syrian military leadership is a) a patriot, b) a member of the local culture, and therefore c) his thinking may adhere to the above described pattern.

I do not want to speculate here but if Assad really didn´t find it necessary to call the Kremlin boss aka “(ex?) abu Ali” right after the plane incident, couldn´t it be because of his will to (publicly) abstain from any form of involvement in the incident – even if it were for the sympathetic one? Because if the Russians decided to play the “about-Syria-without-Damascus” game in Idlib, would it be really too surprising if Damascus (on any next opportunity, regardless whether in hints or in deeds etc.) be about adopting similarly non-standard “ways of behavior” towards Moscow?
